Whitechapel – Hymns in Dissonance (2025) Review
Summary
Full disclosure... I'm not a huge fan of deathcore. But I am a fan of dissonance, and in hymnal form - sign me up! Hymns in Dissonance is a return to form for Whitechapel, re-indulging in their brand of oppressive aggression rather than the proggy-esque tropes they were flirting with previously. Save for a momentarily interlude in Ex Infernis (which really just feels like the calm of walking to the gallows), Whitechapel have crafted a relentless album with essentially no reprieve: there is no light to bask in here, no shade to shield you from the accosting sun, and little to no hooks to satiate that more commercial or melodic appetite. If you're looking for a depressive and oppressive experience, then you've found it here in Hymns in Dissonance. You can probably even cut a tree with a steak knife if you've got this running. Good
- Massively oppressive atmospheres - not everyone's style, but clearly this is the intention and it's done really well
- Vocal stylings only compliment the oppression
- Relentless album
- Great compositional execution across the whole album
- No "bad" songs
- Little to no shit-house deathcore, awfully un-musical breakdowns. Sorry deathcore fans but I hate that nonsense
Bad
- A couple of extra hooks throughout the album would have kept me more engaged... but this isn't typically my preferred listen so what the f*ck do I know
