Alarum – Recontinue (2024) Review

Summary
Australia's lovechild of Cynic and Death, Alarum's releases always seem to find a soft spot in my heart. Alarum are unmistakably Alarum - unique, noticeable, and memorably so - and Recontinue is no different. The Ron Jarzombek and, of course, Allan Holdsworth influences are prominent here, and save for an appearance by a didgeridoo, it really embodies the approach Australian prog bands tend to take which is in being distinct. Fantastic leads and melodies, thrashy and heavy rhythms where it fits, and raspy yelling occasionally thrown in for good measure. Alarum have been at it since the early 90s, and they are still as good as ever.
Good
  • Great blend of heavy and jazzy
  • A great prog album
  • Australian
  • Very unique sound
Bad
  • Heavier sections would have been uplifted with more methodical, slower rhythms

The resident cave dwelling, chug loving, prog snob that doesn't like prog. You'll find me overindulging in mediocre music and rating it way too high.
