How memorable and captivating various melody lines are. This includes all instrumentation. Does each lead and rhythmic layer of the instrumentation construct what the atmosphere is supposed to be? Will I remember these melodies and atmospheres once the album is over? Will I care to remember them?

Rhythms & Percussion

Do the rhythms and percussive elements complement the music? Do these elements overcome me and pull me into a visceral, rhythmic symbiosis with the music? Do these rhythms and percussive elements lay a wonderful foundation for the rest of the instrumentation?

This is not indicative of technicality in this area, and technicality sits as a high-risk, high-reward element of this area.

Vocals

Do the vocals – if any – complement the music? Are they used a valuable instrument in and of themselves? Do they stand out as necessary for the overall composition? Do I yearn for their return?

Lyrics / Themes

Does the atmosphere lend itself to the thematic goal of the album? Does the album set out to accomplish what it intended? Is what it intended actually worth listening to?

Composition

Is the album well put together as a whole? Does it’s composition justify their stylistic decisions? Does the composition bring the whole album together in a way the other elements can’t?
