Piah Mater – Under the Shadow of a Foreign Sun (2024) Review
Summary
When some people hear Piah Mater, they immediately think of Opeth in a favella - and that's fair enough! Not because it's a lower quality version of our favourite progressive death metal wankery, but because it's a valiant rendition of what Opeth was achieving in the progressive death metal space: new ideas, new riff structures, and new atmospheres. Piah Mater do this exceptionally well, and they're pioneers in their own right when it comes to the construction of a long song: their ability to capture and hold you unto their whim is truly inspirational, and Under the Shadow of a Foreign Sun is that for 50 minutes. Hell yes, Piah Mater. Good
- Great harsh vocals and ethereal cleans
- Fantastic setting of atmospheres
- Great appreciation for the art of crescendo
- Opeth-y riffs mixed with Swallow the Sun (IYKYK)
- Doomy without being too downtrodden and depressive
Bad
- Some of the longer songs can drone on without exploring new, exciting avenues
