The Black Dahlia Murder – Servitude (2024) Review

Summary
I don't want to sound like a parrot repeating what many others before me have said, believing The Black Dahlia Murder would have disbanded after the passing of Trevor Strnad but I definitely believed it. Coming into the first album without him, I was apprehensive, worried they would lose what made them them. Thankfully, I was wrong. Brian Eschbach has stepped into massive shoes and kept their sound alive with their latest release. TBDM is back and bringing more of what fans would have loved from 'Nightbringers' especially but making it darker, heavier and more aggressive. There will always be a melancholic cloud over the band sure, but their new line up and works helps keep their name amongst the juggernauts of Melodic Death Metal.
Good
  • Guitars on point as always
  • Transitions smooth
  • Iconic, brutal TBDM sound
Bad
  • Catchier, more memorable riffs would help immortalize the album
  • Vocals are good, just need to tighten their mix
8.3
Great
Leads & Melodies - 8.4
Rhythms & Percussion - 8.4
Vocals - 8.3
Lyrics & Themes - 8
Composition - 8.2

STAFF COMMENTS

CHUGLEY CHARTINGTON

While not necessarily their best work, Servitude is definitely a welcome addition to the year’s metal charts and is still a completely fire album. Certain albums in the same vein (Slaughter the Giant’s Abomination) are, in my opinion, outperforming The Black Dahlia Murder for their own renowned sound, but that says nothing to the strength of this album. I’m hearing more Job for a Cowboy (suprisingly) and Inferi than traditional BDM, but I’m here for it.

Sorting the musical gems being released through the swampy waters is a tedious task, so why not let me do it for you.
