Steven Wilson – The Overview (2025) Album Review

Summary
Steven Wilson's musical catalogue is one that I have always admired. From his earliest records with Porcupine Tree, to his modern solo releases, I have enjoyed (in different levels) it all. His latest solo release, 'The Overview' feels like a move away from his previous two releases and a mix of his earlier solo work and Porcupine Tree days. His opening track, 'Objects Outlive Us' is a bold statement song, clocking 23 minutes but the time is well spent. Infusing melodic rock elements with slow, melancholic instrumental passages accentuated by spacy, sweeping guitar solos it sets the stage for what the rest of the album ahead. What follows can only be best described as a time machine back to early Porcupine Tree, bringing me back to 'Voyage 34 / The Sky Moves Sideways' era with its atmospheric, space elements mixed with recorded audio passages fully immersing you in the soundscape Steven is shaping. My only critique, and its minor, is I would have liked more. Maybe another song to expand on the imagery and sound a little more. However, what he has delivered was a incredible voyage nonetheless.
Good

  • Phenomenal soundscape and atmosphere
  • Guitar work top notch, thematically enthralling
Bad
  • Run time could be longer (another track or two perhaps)
  • Vocals a bit weak in spots

Sorting the musical gems being released through the swampy waters is a tedious task, so why not let me do it for you.
