Dawn of Ouroboros – Bioluminescence (2025) Review

Summary
Bioluminescence by Dawn of Ouroboros is a bit of a hit and miss, but in a strange way. Chelsea's vocals are great, and the stark contrast between her cleans and growls fits directly into the instrumentality of the album (and band) - dark, dissonant heavy sections with almost whimsical softer passages. The guitars, while clearly working on overtime pay, are a little difficult to parse and discern (at least the subtle melodic lines during the heavier sections are) within the entirely of the mix, which takes away from the overall impact the individual instruments could have made. Regardless, Bioluminescence, like an ode to it's name, is exactly that: motes of light among the dark and dreary, which captures the essence of an aggressive, blackened, yet ethereal and majestic sounding album.
Good
  • Chelsea's vocals are huge
  • Great creation of atmospheres
  • The melodic lines fit really well into the aggression
  • Drumming and percussive elements are solid
  • Appropriately doomy without overindulging
Bad
  • More clarity for the guitars would have been nice, as the mix has a tendency towards being a little muddy
  • Would have like more clean vocals sitting atop the heavier sections - would have uplifted the atmospheres that touch more

The resident cave dwelling, chug loving, prog snob that doesn't like prog. You'll find me overindulging in mediocre music and rating it way too high.
