Mechina – Bellum Interruptum (2025) Review

Summary
Having followed Mechina since their earliest release, enjoying their essentially yearly releases, I remember a time where I would be looking forward to hearing what new symphonic and grandiose stories and themes they'd explore. While I still enjoy Mechina's releases, they're still doing the same formulaic and identifiable stylings that they always have, now (and moreso over the last few releases) with Melissa's vocals being more of a melodic staple. That being said, one of Mechina's shining elements is the continuation of a grand narrative that began with their 2011 album Conquerer and has progressed almost yearly from then - a very ambitious creative project that is certainly worth exploring for those merits alone. Musically we're still getting the symphonic industrial metal that is expected, without guitar solos or soaring lead melodies, but this is all intentional for the delivery of the narrative. Bellum Interruptum is more melodic and grimy metal adventures which continues to serve as a yearly (or every 2 years, at this point) gift that never disappoints, but also rarely exceeds my high expectations for them. Still good, though.
Good
  • Melissa's vocals are always a nice touch
  • Some very head-bangable and memorable riffs
  • Atmospherically what you expect from Mechina, which is quite nice
  • Strong thematic and lyrical content and consistency
  • Symphonic elements continue to shine
Bad
  • Current Mechina (and for the last few albums) has a tendency to homogenise a lot of their songs, with the lyrical themes being a primary differentiator. More variety and discernability in songs would be nice
  • Slowing the songs/sections in the songs down a tad, leaning into more half-time, etc, would help the individual songs stand out from one another

The resident cave dwelling, chug loving, prog snob that doesn't like prog. You'll find me overindulging in mediocre music and rating it way too high.
