Etherius – Hymns of the Crimson Raven (2024) Review

Summary
I don't know why this crimson raven deserves to have hymns dedicated to it, and without any lyrical exploration I'll just have to be unsatisfied. Thankfully that doesn't really matter as the music speaks for itself - it's melodically rich, has a satisfying range of rhythmic approaches, and while it's only 29 minutes long, this time is used very effectively. Hymns of the Crimson Raven is produced by Angel Vivaldi, and even musically it holds a lot of the same melodic elements that he too likes to utilise - and I'm here for it. This is a solid album, and if you're an instrumental metal kind of person, this will be an easy addition to your playlists.
Good
  • There are some real filthy riffs here
  • Memorable melodies that do a great job at voicing the album
  • Every instrument in the mix performs well
Bad
  • Only short songs - it would have been nice to have a couple of longer songs that explore more fleshed out themes and atmospheres
  • 29 minute runtime
7.9
Good
Leads & Melodies - 8
Rhythms & Percussion - 7.9
Themes - 7.8
Composition - 7.8
The resident cave dwelling, chug loving, prog snob that doesn't like prog. You'll find me overindulging in mediocre music and rating it way too high.
