Ihsahn – IHSAHN (2024) Review
Summary
Ihsahn, the brains of Emperor, continues his solo project with the humbly titled IHSAHN, and boy am I glad he keeps doing it. Throughout this album are some incredibly compelling moments, driven by evil melodies and haunting instrumentals that are precisely crafted and delivered - it's a real treat. You will find yourself at periods in this album being completely enthralled with what's happening, perhaps without even knowing why, but the visceral nature of the album - between the riff writing, rhythms, and melodic choices - has it veiled in a confronting ambiguity that is paradoxically unsatisfying and satisfying. It's good, listen to it, but be prepared to be musically confronted and challenged. Good
- A great musical experience
- A sense of grandiosity
- Ihsahn's vocals age like a fine sauerkraut
- His most ensemble-focused work yet
Bad
- Drum fills could use some work, but they aren't the essential components of the songs
