Octoploid – Beyond The Aeons (2024) Review

Summary
I'm a big Olli-Pekka fanboy - Amorphis are great, and Barren Earth are a personal favourite - so after discovering Octoploid and listening without prior knowledge of the band members, it was unmistakably Barren Earth-esque. A tad more psychedelic, sludgy, and at times poppy/accessible, Beyond The Aeons is a great addition to the progressive death metal charts for the year with their eclectic exploration of a musically bizarre, vintage orgy that seems to better belong in the early 2000s, but I'll gladly have it in the 20's.
Good
  • Unique riffs
  • A lot of keyboard-driven melodies
  • Nice bass prominence
  • Vocals fit great among all of the proggy oddities
Bad
  • A lot of proggy risks taken, and some don't have the intended payoff
7.8
Good
Leads & Melodies - 8.1
Rhythms & Percussion - 7.6
Vocals - 8.2
Lyrics & Themes - 7.4
Composition - 7.9
The resident cave dwelling, chug loving, prog snob that doesn't like prog. You'll find me overindulging in mediocre music and rating it way too high.
