Theophonos – Ashes In The Huron River (2024) Review

Summary
If GHB was an album I imagine it would sound something like Ashes in the Huron River. I'm not sure how to explain it, but this album is oddly therapeutic, as if to say: regardless of the struggles you're currently enduring, or the vicissitudes that worry you, these are but fleeting anxieties when you're listening to Ashes in the Huron River. This is not to say that Theophonos have unleashed some kind of sonic contagion that you should avoid - quite the opposite! Theophonos presents a strange style of haunting yet gorgeous blackened death metal that tricks you into engaging with it with some groovy slight-of-hand... and before you know it you're punching your dry wall (it's therapy, though).
Good
  • A unique brand of dark and oppressive
  • Strangely groovy
  • Lovely production despite the clear intention to be confrontingly difficult to listen to
Bad
  • Surprisingly, some of the vocals are drowned out in the mix
  • A soaring lead here and there would have been fantastic... oh well

The resident cave dwelling, chug loving, prog snob that doesn't like prog. You'll find me overindulging in mediocre music and rating it way too high.
