Darko US – DETHMASK 3 (2025) Review
Summary
The angst assault squad is back with an evolution of horrorcore that seems to define them - and one I quite like, frankly. Despite deathcore breakdowns being packed with horror motifs, there’s a novelty to it that adds to the staying power of the songs. That said, the album is only 27 minutes long.
It’s a short but eclectic mix of elements, with more than enough to keep you gripped - assuming you're after an experience filled with anxiety, dread, confusion, delight, and even more confusion. Expect filthy rhythmic lines, haunting atmospheres, and jarring leads that are both dissonant and glitchy, all wrapped in a package of, well… likely discomfort.
If you're a deathcore fan looking to expand your horizons into the more experimental side of this festering - sorry, burgeoning - genre, then Darko US and DETHMASK 3 might just scratch that itch. If extreme metal isn’t your thing, best stay away, fam. Good
- I like the horror atmospheres
- The lyrical content and themes are clearly impassioned
- The overall experience is unique (enough) to be memorable
- The vocals, while almost impossible to understand, are a nice accentuation of the horror elements
- The reprieves that are splayed throughout the album are nice (and welcome) touches
Bad
- No hooks make the songs hard to latch on to (for normies)
- Melodic lines are weak - but I doubt this is unintentional, so it's not of major impact
