Ex Deo – Year Of The Four Emperors (2025) Review
Summary
Ex Deo is a band I did not know of and their latest EP, 'Year Of Four Emperors' seemed like a perfect entry point. With a run time of just shy of 20 minutes across 4 songs (each titled a different Roman emperor during the first civil war), Ex Deo hits the ground running, setting the tone early on. Casting you into the chaos with deep growling vocals and aggressive tones, Ex Deo attempts to sweep you up in the storm they shape. Operative word being attempts, unfortunately. Fans of symphonic death metal bands may find this EP is right up their alley but many may find it missing the mark rather than blowing their socks off. Good
- A tense, violent EP that throws you into the turbulent times of the first Roman Civil War
- Symphonic keys and operatic flourishes helps accentuate the atmosphere
Bad
- Longer run time would give more space to add catchy lead hooks or build higher highs with their symphonic elements
- Instrumentation lacking in parts, relies too heavily on the same rhythms
