Killswitch Engage – This Consequence (2025) Review

Summary
5-ish years since the release of Atonement, it's been a long wait for what isn't a particularly impressive album with This Consequence. While overall the album is a fairly good one and certainly worth listening to, it simply does not have the lasting and memorable hooks that their earlier albums had - those moments that were genre defining. With that being said, what I absolutely loved and was pleasantly surprised with, were the blackened/more aggressive sections that coloured some songs. These sections prove to me that KSE have the potential to be breaking more ground than they currently are, and while that itself is tantalising given the history of the band and what they're currently putting out, it's overshadowed by the mediocrity of the album as a whole. A quick aside: have I been huffing paint in my sleep or is there tamborine in most of the choruses? If yes, I fail to see the reasoning to include such a flaccid instrument into already flaccid choruses, but then again the tamborine isn't making or breaking them. This Consequence is a fairly decent addition to the KSE discography, but save for a few songs, will be one that I forget quickly.
Good
  • Some great riffing sections, and in some cases throughout entire songs
  • The heavier sections are a welcome addition
  • Jesse's vocals are still strong
  • A few really tight atmospheres
Bad
  • Choruses feel contrived and not the soaring, memorable choruses of KSE past
  • Chorus tamborines
  • Generally fairly forgettable

The resident cave dwelling, chug loving, prog snob that doesn't like prog. You'll find me overindulging in mediocre music and rating it way too high.
