Legado de una Tragedia – Lovecraft (2025) Review
Summary
A staple in symphonic power metal for the last 17 years, Legado de una Tragedia (or, perhaps more specifically, Joaquin Padilla) has put together a symphonically driven "rock opera" (their words, not mine). While that is certainly a fitting moniker, I prefer to think of it as Lovecraft as it was intended - a bit muddy and completely incomprehensible (no hablo espanol). It's probably not as dark as the source material would necessitate (there are certainly plenty of darker atmospheres, save for the high vocals), but it is a melodically rich and enjoyable journey nonetheless. If the instruments were cleared up a touch and brought a little forward in the mix, with the vocals brought back, the (presumably) increased clarity could have improved my experience with the album - be it as rich as it is. Good stuff, though. Good
- Provocative atmospheres, accentuated by the symphonic prevalence
- Good, engaging rhythms that compliment the atmosphere
- Some great leads and melodic lines
- The source material is great, and while not as much as I'd hoped to have heard, the darker elements are done really well
Bad
- I gotta say, the clean vocals don't really do it for me at times. The seldom screams are sick, though
- Overall mix favours the clean vocals too much - comes across as instrumentally a little muddy
