March of Scylla – ANDROMEDA (2025) Review
Summary
You'd think for a place named Chug Charts that a chug-filled album would score higher. But you'd be wrong. As a fan of post metal since ISIS's Panopticon, while self-described as post metal, March of Scylla's ANDROMEDA definitely falls short of the iconic albums that defined the genre. Sure, those are enormous shoes to fill, but in contrasting what made those iconic albums great - the attention to atmosphere, crescendo, engaging rhythms, and compelling storytelling through longer songs - these elements are only faintly present here, but that's enough. ANDROMEDA features a lot of energetic, gallop-filled rhythmic sections with subtle melodic lines that guide you through the dreary atmospheres the album likes to dwell within. I didn't find myself particularly captivated by any one song, and at times was left thinking "didn't I already listen to this?" which isn't necessarily a good experience. That being said, if you like any of the songs on the album, you'll enjoy the whole thing - if nothing else, then as an exercise in being immersed in a trudge of chugs. Good
- The consistency between songs is a strong point, albeit the variety is limited
- Interesting vocal stylings
- Good, engaging rhythms
- Dark and methodically slow atmospheres
Bad
- Not enough differentiation between songs
- Clean vocals are weak, but I kind of like that?
