Obscura – A Sonication (2025) Review

Summary
I'm no stranger to the controversies surrounding Obscura, but this review will be outside of the struggles of the band and will only focus on the actual album itself. This album feels a lot more traditional melodic death metal than technical, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but this isn't why anyone is listening to Obscura. That being said, it's still a technically oriented album, with a strong focus on the leads and captivating melodies that will guide you through the underlying death metal riffs and aggressive rhythms. Nothing is too overpowering in A Sonification (except, maybe, The Sun Eater) but it's still a highly energetic and melodically pleasing album. I'll be honest, though, if it wasn't for a specific section in Evenfall, I'd skip it entirely, and that makes me feel a certain way about the album as a whole. It's a real Hours of Wealth (IYKYK) situation. A Sonification is a really solid album that I'd happily recommend to fans of melodic or technical death metal, intergalactic bass, oddly phonetic weedly deedly, or anyone taking adderall in a corn field.
Good
  • Strong hold over melody
  • Engaging rhythms that compliment the leads
  • Great respect for when to utilise vocals
  • Intergalactic bass
  • Great compositions on display here, folks
Bad
  • The slower, melancholy prevalent sections are a little too dull
  • The dynamic between the leads and rhythms in the mix feels a little flat whenever the leads are present
  • Opening the album sounding exactly like Necrophagist hurt me
8.1

The resident cave dwelling, chug loving, prog snob that doesn't like prog. You'll find me overindulging in mediocre music and rating it way too high.
