Serenity in Murder – Timeless Reverie (2025) Review
Summary
Metal from Japan has always had a sweet spot in my heart, not because of my collection of katanas and Saitama body pillows, but because of how unique the (let's say) better bands are, and the impressions they've made with me over the years - and Timeless Reverie from Serenity in Murder certainly has that about it. What grips me most about Timeless Reverie, beyond the sewer-monster vocals, is the energy, both rhythmically and melodically, of the album. While it's not a particularly tight album, with plenty of blemishes, the whole of it is very enjoyable: quintessential melodic death metal riffs, rhythms, and progressions which keeps the album quite accessible, despite the fairly inaccessible vocals (I like it). The symphonic elements in Timeless Reverie are quite pronounced throughout the course of the album, giving a more robust and vibrant soundscape which is quite a nice mainstay - it's not too overplayed, but even if it was, I'd like it. Overall, Serenity in Murder have put out a thoroughly decent album that is decently worth your time. Good
- Love the blackened elements
- And paired with the symphonic elements it creates a very enjoyable soundscape
- The Innsmouth Dagon acolytes, clearly underwater, are a clear inspiration for the vocals (half kidding) and I like it a lot
- Energetic rhythms keep the album engaging throughout
- Great melodic sections and subtle melodic lines in the heavier bridge/verse sections
Bad
- Mix has a tendency to get quite muddy (not necessarily a bad thing to me)
- Clean vocals are a bit of an outlier in terms of quality additions to the music - not particularly compelling or welcomed when they appear (seldomly)
